Emma Hitchcock is a painter from Charlottesville, Virginia. She is a fourth-year J. Sanford Miller Arts Scholar at the University of Virginia and is double majoring in Studio Art and Anthropology. Hitchcock’s work is primarily acrylic and oil painting focusing on the confluence of queerness and abstraction. She explores themes of disorientation, liminality, and acceptance through her experimentation with color, form, and illusion.





Emma Hitchcock, Not Quite, Both, and Neither, 2022. Acrylic on canvas, 12 x 16 inches. This painting is sixteen inches tall by twelve inches wide and is acrylic on canvas. This piece is very colorful, with light pink in the upper left corner, moving into shades of yellow and green, then into a light turquoise stripe diagonal from the top right to bottom left corner. The bottom right corner is a dark magenta with a dark blue green separating it from the turquoise above. The painting is a combination of downward strokes and drips, blending together while holding their own form. White cloud-like strokes run across the middle of the work, and thin marker lines in multi-colors weave their way through the piece. Emma Hitchcock, Bodies Implied, 2022. Acrylic on wood panel, 24 x 48 inches. This painting is forty-eight inches tall by twenty-four inches wide. This is one of two works painted on panel, providing a smooth flat texture for the paint to sit on. It is also the most geometric work, consisting of a diagonal grid of rectangles, tilted with the top left corners higher than the right. The rectangles are painted with a flat wood-inspired pattern in shades of mustard yellow, dark pink, and dark green. The grid follows the same pattern in shades of royal blue. One white line traces the bottom and right sides of the central triangle, implying potential depth, or highlight. Emma Hitchcock, At the Margins, 2022. Acrylic on canvas, 12 x 10 inches. This piece is acrylic on canvas and is ten inches tall by twelve inches wide. The left third of the work is a navy blue wash which is blended diagonally with a salmon color on the right two thirds of the painting. Blended horizontal lines cut across the blue, in shades of mustard and red. Cutting across the right third of the work from the top right corner to the middle of the bottom edge, is a thick white cloud-like form that drips to the left. Thin marker lines in navy, light pink, and brown form loose lines wrapped throughout the work, engaging with and going against the flowing colors. Emma Hitchcock,Extended Shapes, 2022. Acrylic onwood panel, 10 x 12 inches.This is one of the smallest works, at twelve inches tall by ten inches wide. It is a looselygeometric piece with three bulbous forms, cut off by the top, left, and right edges. The top andleft shapes are in various shades of light green, while the right shape is in shades of pink. Theforms mimic tree rings, with color gradients within them. Shaky grids drawn in dark blue andlight pink form in and on top of the shapes. The rings that form around the three shapes are inred, and are varnished in a high gloss so they shine in contrast with the matte finish of the restof the painting. Emma Hitchcock, In Relation to, 2022. Oil on canvas, 36 x 24 inches. The only horizontal painting of the group, this work is three feet tall by two feet wide. This piece uses the thinnest washes of paint with a light blue, light rust, and light pink color palate. The brush strokes create a cloud like environment, softly blended together, with one bright stroke of red just off-center in the right half of the work. The ephemeral quality of this work is clear from afar, and involves looking closely at soft drips and lines to understand the detail of the work. Emma Hitchcock, Chartreuse, 2022. Acrylic on canvas, 24 x 48 inches. This painting measures at four feet tall and two feet across. Four uneven triangle forms take up the upper third of the work, with brush strokes and small lines running across the top and left side. Using acrylic paint on canvas, the artist employs the use of bright color in this work. Bright chartreuse in the background is in conversation with dark green, sky blue, baby pink, and rusty orange in the foreground Emma Hitchcock,Space Between (Dog’s Dinner),2022.Oil on canvas, 40 x 30 inches.This painting is forty inches tall by thirty inches wide. Made of light oil washes, theGamsol-soaked canvas has a flowing yet rough texture. Drip marks made from the paint thinner look like stretch marks flowing from right to left across the painting. The work has a light redwash running from the top left to the mid-right of the painting with a light green wash on eitherside. Spurts of bright red, green, and cerulean blue appear throughout the work.
